Star metal is a great resource to track down and make copious supplies of. In almost all cases the simple solution would be to build a sandstone foundation near and place the jar on top of it. The only downside to this method is that it can sometimes be tricky to position the Jar next to the meteorite. One Explosive Jar will be enough to remove the shell. Carefully position an Explosive Jar next to the meteorite and shoot with an arrow or just ignite by hand. Throw 9 Tar Orbs on the meteorite and then throw the Fire Orb. This is the cheapest way to do access the ore but also the longest. Use Grease and Fire Orbs to burn the shell off. The Star Metal ore is encased in the dark smoldering rock - you need to destroy this. On closer inspection you will see it has a golden sheen with an uneven, cratered surface.
